In another example of how the wealthy use the tax code to their benefit while public schools suffer, some states are funneling public dollars to private schools and allowing businesses and upper-income taxpayers to turn a profit in the process, according to a report released by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP).
The report examines tax policies in 20 states that have circumvented public opposition or even constitutional obstacles to publicly funded private school vouchers by using their tax codes to either encourage donations to private school scholarship funds, also known as neovouchers or backdoor vouchers or to offset the cost of private school tuition. Ten of these states actually allow taxpayers to turn a profit on their donations to private schools.
Congratulations to everyone who organized, participated in and helped spread the word about the AROS October 6th Walk-Ins! By all accounts, it was an amazing day at both the local level and at the national level. With the united efforts of thousands, we lifted up a powerful message about the importance of public education.
This recap can only hope to share some of the reach, energy and power of the walk-ins. Each of you will have your own story, and will have the opportunity to build on that story over the coming weeks and months.
The media coverage for our Walk-Ins has been unbelievable. According to our communications firm, which has been collecting press from the event, we had well over 100 stories about the walk-ins appearing in newspapers, on TV or on the radio in 24 states and in national media including the Washington Post, Huffington Post, Jet Magazine, and on SiriusXM radio stations. A complete (to date) media list is attached.
AROS is proud to announce that dozens of cities are gearing up for a demonstration of support for their public schools and the fight for the Schools All Our Children Deserve. On October 6 parents, students and educators will gather outside of their schools before the bell to hold a rally and march. Then they will walk into their schools together in a show of solidarity.
