Over the past year, the Center for Popular Democracy (a member of the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools) has been investigating charter schools across the country. Their reports are an effort to hold charter school operators (private companies that receive taxpayer dollars to manage a school) accountable to the same financial and transparency standards as public schools.
Center for Popular Democracy's latest report, which was written with the Chicago-based organization Action Now, delves into the state of charter schools in Illinois, estimating proven and suspected fraud by charter school officials there to be as high as $27.7 million.
You can read more about the report here. You can also read past reports on charter fraud in New York and Pennsylvania. Additionally, the Annenberg Institute for School Reform (another AROS member) released recommendations for effective oversight of charter schools, which you can read here.
